Brooklyn Bridge

My first encounter with the Brooklyn Bridge didn’t come until high school. It was my sophomore year in high school and my school had a baseball game against Murry Bergtraum High School. For those of you who have never heard of the school, it is located in downtown Manhattan on Pearl Street. It just so happens that their baseball field was located underneath the Brooklyn Bridge. I remember being particularly excited to play that game because of the legend that goes along with that field and the Brooklyn Bridge. I had heard a story of Manny Ramirez, former MLB player, hitting a home run onto the Brooklyn Bridge during his high school days with George Washington High School. Immediately after arriving at the field I remember standing at home plate while staring at the Brooklyn Bridge wondering whether the story was true or not. Standing at home plate, the bridge had a deceptive distance.

From ground level it seems to be a realistic target for a high school ballplayer, but from an aerial view (like the one in the photo), you could see how far of a home run it was (or wasn’t) . At the time aluminum bats were allowed in high school baseball in New York City so maybe he did hit that home run. Until this day I still wonder if he hit that home run or not.
