Over the weekend, I attended Battle of the Barrios for the very first time. It is an event where Filipinos from different colleges come together and perform. The performances consist of a theme each team was given to interpret in a skit. In these skits, each team would show some relations to Filipino culture and showoff their talents. This event is so widely spread among Filipinos that even this year a television company from the Philippines, GMA, sponsored it. Instead of the judges consisting of a person from each school, this year professional studio, art, and dance directors judged. The teams are judged based in relation to Filipino culture, originality of the skit, dance, and overall. To me, all school’s performances were awesome. Their creativity and dancing amazed and I wish our school was able to perform. However, we did not have enough volunteers. It was still a great experience and I met many new faces and some familiar faces. Being able to bond with other Filipinos and knowing that our little island was watching made me feel closer to my heritage than ever before. The message I’m trying to send out is that we should do fun and creative things with our culture so, that we may feel closer to our heritage. Also, that one little event or action can make a big difference.
