Surprisingly, writing my essay was not as difficult as I thought it would be, considering I picked a poem with only six lines. I found that this poem is the one I understood and could elaborate on the most, despite it’s size ( I chose Autobiography: New York by Charles Reznikoff). As I sat in class and read the introductory paragraphs of my classmates I realized I had work to do. I need to work on being more creative with my introduction and including more of my own thoughts and really think of the idea that needs to come across. At this point my introduction is simple and does not elaborate on my thesis in a creative way. My draft is not finished by any means which is stressful. Midterm week came in the way of writing a draft that was what I consider quality and a good starting point.
Something I need to work on is not repeating the same idea or example throughout my whole paper. I need to established each of my supporting ideas and turn each idea into a paragraph of its own. I want to do this poem justice by bringing out its key ideas in an eloquent and creative way, which is hard to do. I am excited about the topic of my poem because it is something I am passionate about and believe in so I hope I do it justice. I think the more I read the poem and my draft, the more I’ll understand how to closely read a poem; something I have never been asked to do before. Hopefully this break will allow me to clear my head from the stress of midterms and really focus on this paper.
