The Annoying Paper

After writing the first paper, this paper was a little bit easier because the topic was simpler. We were told to write a paper on one of the several poems or pieces of literature that were given. I chose to write about “New York Poem” by Terrence Hayes. I found this to be pretty interesting because there was a lot of things in the poem that I knew I could relate too and write about. At first it seemed easy in my head but on paper it was much harder than I thought it would be. I had the body all planned out but it was the introduction and conclusion that made it hard. I remember in high school how easy it was to write a thesis but once I went to college it seems as if I forgot how to write one. I was really stumped because my thesis didn’t really show what my argument was. Good thing we have these peer reviews because the feedback I got gave me a better idea on how to develop my thesis.

Now to the conclusion, which was surprisingly harder to write than the thesis. I don’t really consider the conclusion to be hard but for this paper I was struggling with it. After I reread my conclusion I realized that I basically just repeated everything I wrote in my body. The point of a conclusion is to wrap up your essay and to leave your reader wanting more and mine definitely didn’t do that. I wrote maybe about 5 different conclusions and I didn’t like any of it. It irritated me to the point where I wrote couple of sentences that lead to a well developed conclusion and ended it off with “I DON’T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO WRITE.” Yup I was that annoyed with it. I know in high school I was told that conclusion is the last thing to worry about but I feel like once I went to college, the conclusion was the “make it or break it” part of your essay. After these peer reviews I definitely have a sense of what to write and I hope that I can come up with a well developed conclusion and thesis.

I feel the same way! I think that the conclusion is super important because it’s the last thing that you read and stays in your mind. It’s like watching a really good movie with a terrible ending. No matter how good the first 80 minutes of the movie were, if the last 10 minutes sucked, you’ll be left disappointed. That’s why I think the conclusion needs a lot of thinking and effort put into it, not just 5 minutes of restating some of your ideas (that’s me). Now if they just weren’t super hard to write….that would be great.
