James Baldwin Reflection

I found the James Baldwin documentary trailer and bits of media that we watched in class to be extremely enlightening. The documentary made me more interested in the reading we were assigned to read by him. I went home that day and researched more on him and his past and even some other bits of literature. It helped me to envision Baldwin speaking, his background and the setting he lived in and experienced. I have always been aware of his name, James Baldwin, but never his background and character. I have developed some sort of admiration and appreciation for him and the words he shares with us to learn about the New York that we are blind to. It’s quite amazing how someone who unfortunately experienced so much pain can be such an exceptional speaker and intelligent individual. He is most definitely a perfect example of the saying “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” I look forward to reading more James Baldwin in the future. May he r.i.p.

In another side of the world, I’d like to mention how I was unable to attend the poetry event we were invited to attend this weekend due to work however, I did hear about the event through a friend. My friend is an elementary school teacher but loves to share poetry with her class even at a young age. She attended the event and told me that there were plenty of great poets and speakers who shared individual favorites and interpretations of David Rattray and his literature. To be honest, I wasn’t AS interested in attending the event but wish I did have the chance to go after hearing the feedback from my friend.
