When the Negro was in vogue

When I read “When the Negro was in vogue, I thought that the popularity and influence of the Negro Style and Art stemming from Harlem sort of paralleled to the 1980s drag queen culture in Harlem and its popularity. The style and performances of the drag queens gained such immense popularity and influenced the fashion and runway performances. Voguing, a highly stylized house dance, created by the Negro and Latino drag queens, emerged as the new rage on the runway and infiltrated into mainstream pop culture with many music videos featuring the new style of dance. Madonna’s song “vogue” featured this new rage. There are six elements of the vogue : hand performance, catwalk, duckwalk, floor performance, dips, and spins (unofficial). When competing in a vogue femme battle, contestants should showcase all six elements in an entertaining fashion. Voguing also symbolised the Negro style and fashion and brought back the Negro in Vogue.
