I really liked this piece of writing. It talks about empowerment to women and how they must be strong. It says that through poetry we can free ourselves. It is the “bridge” that connects our dark side and light. After crossing this bridge, we can open our eyes to a whole new world. The world that we aren’t allowed to see, or are afraid to see. As we talked about in class, poetry is not only written poetry. It can be any form of art, whether it be music, paintings, pictures, books, and poems. Also, though it may say women, I think that the this essay could speak to anyone being oppressed. It could be used to talk about discrimination against a certain race, gender, or religion.
There is so much creativity in us that we have not let out. Through exploring different art forms, we can change our perspective, and the perspective of those around us. Unfortunately, we have been forced to follow and conform. Even at school, we have to follow routine and never are allowed to truly express ourselves. This is why I like Baruch, because it not only wants you to succeed in business affairs, the school makes sure you are well-rounded in all subjects. It may be a business school, but it does not lack classes in the arts department.
In conclusion, I think that the author does a great job relaying the importance of arts. She shows that the arts are not a want, but a need. Our minds need art to express and discover new things.
