The readings from the past few weeks made me realize that there is no right or wrong answer regarding New York and a person’s experience in it. We read many different poems from different writers, and the only thing in common about them is that they all write about New York. It is amazing to see that each writer has a totally different perspective of society and the city, even though some of them write about the same place and time. While Baldwin focuses on equality, racism, and equal civil rights, Hughes focuses on the cultural and positive aspects of the black community, and Ginsberg writes about his own terrible experience in his community.
New York enables a person to create his own unique experience and perspective of the city. I feel like all people around me have different perspectives of New York and what it represents. Maybe that’s what so special about New York, that each person is able to live his life he sees fit through his eyes and not through society’s eyes.
