Digital Ideas!

Okay, so gosh I really wish I thought this through a little more. The poem I chose for this project is Charles Bukowski’s poem, Bluebird. I always really loved Bukowski for the fact that everything writes holds so much truth yet sadness. Some people may call him depressing, but I think he writes about sad yet realistic things in such a pretty way, if that makes any sense. His poem, Bluebird, is basically about this idea that we all have these “bluebirds” in us that never see the light of day. Whether it be conscious-thinking or not, we always put some sort of facade on and hide who we really are. My favorite part of the poem is where he says he won’t kill this bluebird but he sometimes lets out at night when nobody is around. I just thought it was heartbreaking, yet so true for practically everyone. Another aspect of the poem that I found interesting was the idea of gender roles in today’s society. In other words, girls should play with dolls and boys should play with toy guys. Bukowski touches on this idea when he says that he can’t cry, which I attribute to the fact that he has to live up to the social constructs of what a real “man” is.

For the nature of this poem, I decided to create a video. If I had any animation skills, I would probably create it around the life of this trapped blue bird. Yet seeing that I don’t have these skills nor any pets, let alone a bird, I have to go with a different approach. So, I was thinking of doing a sped up video of random scenes where gender roles are switched. Some ideas: a little girl playing with toy guns, a guy kissing the camera with lipstick, a dad with a broom and apron. I’m just hoping to play with some stereotypes here, but at the same time I’m kind of worried it will sound cliche?
