I chose the poem “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou because I really liked how it represents the idea that those born into a rich lifestyle take the basic necessities they have for granted, while others that are born poor appreciate everything they have. Because Maya Angelou wrote this poem in 1969, I think she was also trying to make a point about being an African American at the time and being denied the same rights as whites.
To present this in a video, I thought about somehow demonstrating the pleasures of a free bird compared to the suffering of a caged bird and connecting it to Americans’ lifestyles over that of people in third world countries. I’m not sure how to portray this message with images though. Maybe I will make a 3D caged bird looking at a free bird enjoy its freedom. Any ideas or help would be welcome!
