Digital Project

So after going back and forth, forward and backwards, up and down; I have finally chosen a poem (with the help of some reinforcing words)! I was having a dilemma between two poems but my love for one just rose above the other. I am doing the poem “Childhood” by Justin Long and Ishmael Islam which discusses the beauty of childhood while also noting its disappearance. I found this poem a few years ago and somehow always find myself revisiting it. It’s in the form of slam poetry and the way it flows, the pauses at specific moments, the interaction of the authors, and the emphasizing of certain moments always brings a positive reaction out of me.

When thinking of this poem in context with the digital component of this project so many ideas are running through my head. Should I depict my thesis literally? Should I tell a story? Should I leave my video open for interpretation? These questions are flowing through my head as I continue to generate ideas of how I am going to approach my video. Presently (as my thoughts may jump elsewhere) I want to capture video of empty playgrounds, classrooms, and other images that represent childhood. In the beginning of my short film I want to show the clips of the video I’ve gathered with the instrumental of a song in the background (most probably “Sail” by AWOLNATION). I then want to show a sped up transition of either myself or a friend from birth to the present. I’m still figuring if I should add words to the video or leave it as it is. Being that this is my first time making a video I’m a little nervous but I’m also excited to see how my idea will translate to the final product. All ideas and suggestions are welcome!
