I chose to focus on Joshua Beckman’s poem “My square rock is a piece of art,” which reflects on the connection between nature and humans. My thesis is that people who live in the city distance themselves from nature, and this directly effects and damages nature. In my video, I focused on Hudson River and Central Park as examples of natural elements which were ruined by the city.
It took me a while to come up with a thesis that I can relate to and also be specific. After focusing on New York City in my essay, it was easier to make the video than writing my essay. Joshua Beckman’s poem ends on a pessimistic note, where humans and nature are hurt and damaged. I wanted to end my video with the same note to emphasize that if we won’t change our behavior, everyone will be affected.
