Digital Essay for Eileen Myles’ “New York”

It was more difficult actually thinking of what to do than making the video. I had first thought to go with animation. I was going to draw (very imperfectly) a person growing up, while others tell him what to do.
It was about standing up to others, but I really did not know where to go with it. It was turning out to be rather boring and bland. Then, on Thursday, I magically thought of another idea. I filmed myself going home from school. I videoed all the people and things that I encountered on the way home.

I got this idea from Eileen Myles’ poem. She wrote a poem about going through New York and what she saw. I also used words that she used in her poem in my video. So, my video is actually a video poem. I told a story of a simple day in my life, using Myles’ words. I also added music in the background and gave credit to the music artist and to Eileen Myles.

I’m very sorry if you get dizzy while watching the video, it is sped up through the parts where I walk through the city.
