Digital Proposal

For my digital portion of the assignment I’ve decided to use “Having A Coke With You” from Frank O’Hara. I enjoyed Frank O’Hara when we distilled his poems in class. I find his writing to be interpreted in numerous ways for others but evident in its purpose when related to himself, his past and his experiences. His tactics of using observations and experience as a literary tool is an interesting way of giving the reader a blast into the past sort-to-speak. It is also obvious that O’Hara tends to be autobiographical but his work can still be interpreted in several ways in that it connects with the reader, like myself.

In Having a Coke With You, O’Hara basically writes a dedication to his beloved in which he speaks of all the “little things” he adores about her. The poem reads almost like a one-sided dialogue as most of O’Haras work tends to do; a telephone conversation.

In regards to the digital part, I am thinking about filming clips of the “small things” in relationships. Maybe like a couple just sitting but having the times of their lives. Or maybe awkward things or features that mean a lot to a couple. I’m sure that sort of thing is hard to film but I think I can find a way around it.

Anyone have any suggestions?

PS. I strongly recommend reading the poem as it is really beautiful. The simplicity mixed with the choice of words that O’Hara uses is amazing. I think if this was a movie, it would be one of those “chick flicks.” Haha.
