The short story, “The Lost Beautifulness”, by Anzia Yezierska described how heartless people can be. It revealed an un-supporting husband and a landlord who only thought of money. America was a place where hopes and dreams were strived as well as to this day. The main character, Hanneh, only wanted to surprise her son with a beautiful home when he’d come back from overseas. She showed all her neighbors and their eyes shinned. However, the landlord took advantage of her kind heart and robbed her of every cent. Not being able to bare with being robbed any longer she blindly destroyed her home that she spent years innovating for her son’s arrival. In the past, New York City was corrupted with no laws limiting the price of tenants. Landlords would take advantage of this and set the cost of housing to unreasonable prices. Many people would starve and give away things to keep their home just as Hanneh did. According to this story, New York City was not an ideal place to live. Today, there are now laws limiting the price of housing however, there are still a few corrupted landlords.
