I Worry About Muslims Response

In the article, “I worry about Muslims” by Mohammed Hanif, I see the presence of authoritarianism. According to Dictionary.com, Authoritarianism is the enforcement of strict obedience to authority at the expense of personal freedom. The reason why I believe there is a presence of authoritarianism in this article is because in the third paragraph of the article, Hanif explains that his worry is towards “the Muslims who face extinction at the hands of other Muslims in their homelands”. Hanif elaborates by mentioning his past friend Sabeen who was murdered for not being a good enough Muslim. I believe this authoritarianism because it’s not at the hands of the government it’s at the hands of other Muslims who are taking away the personal freedom of their own people because they “condemning” those who aren’t representing Muslims and Islam as they should.

I agree with you that there is a presence of authoritarianism because it does seem like there are many Muslims that seem to be justifying their actions through their own personal beliefs of Islam. However, I sort of disagree with the part where you say the government is not involved because to run the government, there must be a group of people or someone in charge, and with that I think it’s the same Muslims that you claim are taking away the personal freedom of the others.
