Milgram Experiment

I believe this experiment was very unethical, but not as bad at the time. If an experiment like this one was conducted today, there would be many problems due to the laws protecting individuals. The purpose of the study was difficult to understand at first, but once I saw the difficulty the “teacher” had with the study I figured it out. However, not all teachers had trouble. Dr. Thomas Blass stated “Just the fact that he conveyed a sense of authority. roughly 60-65% of people made it to the top of the shock board”. When a person is thrust into a role with authority, they take charge. Herbert Winer stated “You don’t ask them what they would do if they were in the situation, you put them in the situation”. Since they had to obey authority, the results of the experiment proved Milgram’s theory

One Response to Milgram Experiment

Those are some of the quotes that stuck out to me as well. It was not pleasant to find out that 60-65% of the people made it to to the top of the shock board. There was nothing requiring them to stay and continue shocking. If they had chosen to, they could’ve easily got up and quit the experiment. I agree with his statement “When a person is thrust into a role with authority, they take charge.” That’s absolutely true in any case. I have studied social and behavioral psychology that teach human nature is bound to abuse its power. Authority can change the nature of a man.
