Essay #2 Thesis Statement

Thesis: Janet Harris, who is pro-choice, wrote an opinion article in “The Washington Post”, addressing particular proponents of abortion, and she develops key points that all help her argument to be effective, specifically to reach a specific demographic; however, there is also another opinion article, written by a pro-life woman, who responds to Harris’ argument and recognizes some fallacies within it.

For the second essay, I plan on looking at a pro-choice woman’s article about her own people (other pro-choice people) who use the words “difficult decision” to describe unwanted pregnancies and abortion in their argument. I will be addressing the many points Janet Harris makes that are effective, that help her reach the specific demographic that she is trying to reach, the overall structure of her argument, and how that plays a role in an effective argument. Furthermore, I will juxtapose Harris’ argument with another opinion article by a pro-life woman who saw some fallacies in Harris’ argument. For the counter-argument by the pro-life woman, I will recognize the key points that the woman thinks were ineffective, or were incorrect, in Janet Harris’ argument.

I like the plan of using more than one article to enhance your essay. Using the second article shows that you’re passionate about what you’re writing on. Also what would your thesis be? I don’t know if I caught on to the thesis here. In your essay , you should mention the difference(s) between being pro-life and being pro-choice because people tend to think that they’re the same thing.

Yes, Hannah, this is exactly what I want you to do for this essay! It looks like a great article, and you have a specific plan to analyze the effectiveness of the writer’s arguments and language, in terms of a specific audience (demographic) and it also looks like you found a wonderful secondary source. Great work!

It’s a great idea to use two articles that are from two women who have different stances on the issue of abortion. It’s good to use the second article to counter argue Harris’ points since it will be easier to analyze whether Janet Harris’ opinion about abortion is effectively addressed in her argument. For your thesis, I found it too long for a thesis statement. Perhaps, you do not need to mention that there is another opinion article in your thesis since it will be addressed in your body paragraphs. Also you said that Harris develop key points to make her argument effective, I think you should mentions some of the key points that you think Harris uses to make her argument effective.
