Using NYCityMap’s GIS system I looked at two neighborhoods in Brooklyn, at different points in time. The first being my own neighborhood in Bushwick, Brooklyn, using my own apartment as the reference point, seen in the images as the red star. The second being my classmate’s neighborhood in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, using the local café “Café con Libros” as the reference point, seen as a red rectangle.

Looking at my building in the GIS system I noticed that it was so newly built that it doesn’t appear on my street. The map looks like it’s an empty space. The information says “unknown” for year built, but what information is available is provided by the Department of City Planning dated 2019. I switched the map to aerial view of the same neighborhood in 1951. I was very surprised to see that there is not only a building there, the entire neighborhood looks much denser.

Looking at Kerry’s neighborhood was very similar, in that the 1951 aerial image was much denser. Unlike mine however, the reference building, which was erected in 1935, shows up in the present day map.
