In a university consistently ranked as one of the most diverse educational institutions in the US, how can we transcend a basic awareness of ‘languages represented’ and apply a strengths-based framework to our students’ linguistic backgrounds? In this workshop, presenters from Baruch’s Tools for Clear Speech program will share research-based insights that demonstrate how challenging underlying biases about non-native accents can foster meaningful intercultural communication, bolster learning, and cultivate empathy. Through peer discussion and brainstorming activities, participants will consider how they might apply this content to their own pedagogy, and learn strategies to help students increase their sense of agency and ultimately build a more ethical, inclusive academic community.
2:55-3:00pm
Closing, Dr. Anna D’Souza
