Contemporary theatre

Contemporary theatre seems to be loved and talked about the most in theatre history. After reading the reviews on Hamilton though I have never saw it I’m really considering seeing what it’s all about. Being that contemporary theatre was created in the vaudeville time era how has it changed during this era in regards to Hamilton?

Scavenger hunt

What did you learn about theater history in NYC from this assignment? Did you find anything that surprised you?

Doing this scavenger hunt in The city has opened my eyes to how much theater history is in my own city. There was so much information that was brought to my attention that I never realized before I was completely shocked about finding a lot of clues that were found on different blocks, in then some clues where right in my face. Before the hunt started I felt that I would have a hard to finding things in the city but I was so surprised that some of the information was quite easy to find.
What was the most interesting “find” from your scavenger hunt? Why?

The most interesting “find” to me in the scavenger hunt was a person in a costume. I came across the Statue of Liberty. I approached the two people in the costumes and asked them if I can take a picture with them for a scavenger hunt for my school. He seemed extremely happy to take the picture with me, after we took the picture he then told me that he takes pictures for money. Which I had totally forgot because I was so into the scavenger hunt that that’s the whole point of them dressed in the costume. I ended up giving him my last dollar.

What was the experience of completing this assignment like?

I enjoyed my experience with completing this assignment. At first I was overwhelmed with trying to find clues in the rain. I feel like my team and I worked very well with each other. We would split up and look for clues then would meet back up with each-other. It was also something different being that I’ve never done a scavenger hunt like this one. I felt like time was passing by so quickly also. I was extremely happy and shocked once I found out that my team had won I didn’t expect for us to have as many points as we did.

Modernism

Being that a Doll house is based on Modernist and Feminist ways. Why did Henry Ibsen want his plays to be based on theses 2 things ? Do you think this play is related anyway to today’s society? Do you think other playwriters from today would feed off of this play and recreate something similar ?

Being that this was the first time I’ve read  A Doll House I found it too be very interesting. The title matches the main character very well, the main character felt like a doll in a dolls house from being controlled by other people, and not knowing the outside world. It is a metaphor for how women were treated in this time. My concerns are the morality of the individual and the morality of society. If society deems it inappropriate, does that mean it’s not right? If a person puts aside their own well being for the sake of what others, or society, thinks, are they failing themselves, or fulfilling a duty?

Yeddish Museum

Going to the Yiddish Museum for the first time was exciting it was very convenient for me as well. What I found interesting about the museum was the stories, as soon as you walked in you were able to read information about the museum. I enjoyed learning about Mae Simon an incomparable Yiddish dramatic star, she became a professional actress. For Several years she acted at the Yiddish actress she showed off her best skills in a play called “arbi- proze” and became the leading lady at the yiddish theater.

NYPL

It was my first time at the NYPL and I really enjoyed it. I found it interesting that you can get a ton of information about a archive at this place. what I found surprising is that theres a computer room where you can watch old show performances and there free to watch, I also found it interesting how Doug was able to pull up an old archive on his computer and was able to show us how it looked on the old Microsoft Word from 19 years ago it was pretty cool. I feel like i have an idea of how to use a archive for my project. I’d defiantly will go back to NYPL on my own time.

kathakali

I enjoyed watching both films of kathakali although it was difficult to understand the detailed gestures and the well defined body movement that presented the tune. I also liked the mask and makeup and was wondering how did this type of mask and make up start in india?
