The title of the play makes sense when you see how Torvald assumes position of leader in the household, making financial decisions and Nora is just a “doll”/trophy under his command.

Men have to make sacrifices, but these sacrifices wane in comparison to what women must submit to. Living in a society where women are often treated unfairly compared to men does not help either.
