Scavenger Hunt

The scavenger hunt was a fun and tiring learning experience. I really like how my team strategized before we went on our hunt. We first googled the places and came to find most of the 2 point clues were around Astor place and the 1 point clues were in times square. Therefore, we had the boys go to Astor place as the girls roamed Times Square in the rain which was annoying but doable.

On my commute to school I get off the bus in Times Square and I’ve always pass by “Theater Row Diner” and many other theater related attractions but never knew it is called the “Theater District” as obvious it is. Before I wouldn’t think much of it but by this scavenger hunt I learned more about theater and the importance of such attractions. For example, the statue of George M. Cohan would just be another regular statue to me but now I know about it. As I roamed the area I realized how little things such as costumes and stage performances are theater. Theater is everywhere you just may not realize it.

At one point I was tired of googling so I just tried to apply what I saw in the area to any of the clues. Madame Tussauds had a wax of Daniel Craig, outside so I applied that to a clue as many guests visit the museum to admire the wax figures of actors. Next to it I saw Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, that automatically reminds me of vaudeville entertainment with its unusual acts. As time was almost up, the timeline on twitter was throwing me off as it kept refreshing while I so vigorously typed. It was my first scavenger hunt and it was a cool experience. I found my team to be very productive and hard working as we gathered points which in turn reflected positively on us.

Modernism

A doll’s house consist of gender socialization. In which Nora is assigned the role of house wife. When reading this play you can associate the issues of identity to issues in society today. Society is always evolving. Women’s rights are Improving, do you think it will effect theatre or impact future plays ?

MCNY Visit

In the exhibit I found a section for Molly Picon which I found most interesting. Prior to the visit I never heard about Molly Picon and the costumes and film clip let me learn and envision her better. What caught my eye first were the costumes on the mannequins that I thought were rather petite and short. Then I read about the actress and learned she was only 4’11 and because of this she sometimes played the role of little boys.

Visit to NYPL

Prior to our visit of the NYPL, it was discussed in class how librarians are nervous for archives to become digitalized. Initially, I thought it’d be great for librarians/guests to gain easy access. After Doug showed his process of recovering RENT documents via floppy disk, it made a clear point of how digitalization may rise problems in the future for archives. Doug was able to finally view the documents from the 90s, after much work of converting.

Kathakali

In the first video the makeup is very bold and colorful which I think is done to enhance facial expressions. Where as, in the second video the face makeup is still bold however, not as colorful. In the second video there is more movement done around the stage which I think makes up for the face paint in video 1. I found it interesting how the facial expressions in video 1 are strong enough to show emotions and how powerful the eyes were as well.
