Journal 2– Community Service

As a Baruch scholar I feel that community service is an integral part of who we are.  As Baruch Scholars we are responsible for being role models not only to our fellow classmates, but to all college students.  A Baruch Scholar should not only be the ideal student, but the ideal person, and that is where community servive comes in.

To me, there are two types of community service: that which is in the Honors program at Baruch, and that which is within the broader Baruch Community.  Personally, my role is still small within the Baruch Community, but I do plan on that changing the more time I spend at Baruch. I believe that the Honors Program is such a special program that has so much to offer and that those privileges can only be fully taken advantage when the people in the Baruch Scholars community work together to help each other, that way we can all reach our maximum potential, together.

Moreover, within the Baruch Community at large I am slightly more involved.  From my first day at Baruch I started to pay attention to the Hillel and the programs that they had.  Just showing up there everyday made me feel more comfortable in the new environment and ready to get involved when the time comes, which it did.  I started joining some of the classes that they have to offer every week and it has really enhanced my time here at Baruch. On top of that I do think the other people who attend the Hillel can also gain from what I  have to offer them religiously, which I am progressing with.

Overall I think that the Baruch Scholars program is related to community service because that is what the program is all about.  We preach non-stop activity in communities of all shapes and sizes, and that is shown in the way the Baruch scholars conduct themselves in and out of the classroom.

  1. It’s great to hear that you enjoy being a part of the Hillel. From what you’ve written, it seems like a really welcoming and close-knit community (which can be hard to find in colleges sometimes). I also agree with what you said about working together; I definitely think that teamwork can create a much more profound impact in communities, especially with volunteer work.

  2. I also think its awesome that you have found a great community and environment in Hillel. I feel the same about InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. It’s great to develop a sense of community with those who share the same faith as you and grow spiritually as well.
