Act 3 Scene 2 – Act 4
In the beginning of Act 3 seane 2 when Portia is giving her monologue, I found it interesting in the type of wording she used to describe how wary Bassanio should be when choosing a casket. Portia says “Pause a day or two. Before you hazard, for in choosing wrong I lose your company”.(pg.31) It seems to me that she was implying that Bassanio should chose the lead casket since Portia knew that was the only casket that haven’t been chosen yet. As we read on it comes to light that Bassanio’s financial life isn’t as it seems, and Portia finds out firsthand how indebted Bassanio is. Portia no caring about it was what mainly caught me off guard since I thought Bassanio financial issues being revealed would have cause a huge rift between him and Portia.
