Dracula chapters VIII-IX (pp. 93-119)

In chapters VIII-IX we see the a dramatic change in Lucy’s personality. In the beginning she is seen as an innocent girl with childish tenacities. However she her personality changes due the the bit that Dracula put upon her. She refused to get examined and thought this doesn’t seem significant during this time women were expected to do what a man said. So her demonstrating this rebellion shows how the bite impacted her. Furthermore I question why Dracula chose to bite her instead of someone else however it all makes sense when you realize that Dracula who provocative is to ruin the one’s innocence.

  1. I think Lucy’s refusal to be examined by Dr. Seward and her growing defiance after being bitten by Dracula are indicative of her transformation. This change is significant in the context of the novel because it shows the idea that Dracula preys on the innocence of his victims. As for why Dracula chose Lucy, I think He is drawn to Lucy not only because of her beauty but I agree that it’s also because he wants to ruin her purity/innocence.

  2. As discussed in class, I also think that Dracula chose Lucy because she was the most traditional character in the novel. She chose to follow old tendencies where a pure woman is expected to be courted by a man and eventually ends up marrying him.
By biting her, Dracula clearly shows that the “innocent little girl” who goes by the rules is not always lucky enough to survive.

  3. Great blog Mary. I agree with you. In the beginning Lucy is introduce as someone she isn’t now. I also questioned why Dracula did what he did to Lucy and not bite someone else. However, I do think there is something thats going to unveil as we continue reading and I believe there is a connection.

  4. Although Lucy’s personality changes after the bite, as the readers we know it’s not her. Dracula chose her for her innocence and chastity. She was a delicate women who now isn’t. Her drastic change foreshadows what’s to come.
