I had two ideas for a useless kitchen tool:
- The first is a cross between tongs and a spatula. The spatula would sit perpendicular to the tongs so you could use them to grasp anything.
- The second is a mortar and pestle, but the pestle has been combined with a knife so that you cant actually crush anything, just stab it.
I found the exercise to be enjoyable, and would have kept going if there was more time. While I didn’t design anything truly useless, just mostly useless, I came away from it with an appreciation of how different perspectives and experience can be the difference between something being a piece of junk or a valuable tool. Overall, I found it interesting how we were able to find a use for everyone’s “useless” tool, and how far we had to go to make something truly unusable – I believe the suggestion to shrink a tool to a small enough dimension that it couldn’t actually be held was the only way to truly render something useless.
