My favorite (or at least the most memorable) childhood toy was the Tamagotchi, a handheld game where you raised a pet monster. You had to frequently interact with it (feed it, play with it, etc.) to ensure it grew and evolved. If left unattended, it would eventually die. I remember if fondly because I really wanted a dog but had bad allergies. This toy served as my surrogate pet.
