Ever is Over All and Guitar Drag

Two of the stand out pieces to me were Ever is Over All and the Guitar Drag piece.

Ever is Over All struck me on an emotional level. My immediate honest reaction was, “what a prick!” I hate seeing destruction of costly property because I know that someone’s going to have to pay for it which means a consumption of whatever wealth they’ve accrued through presumed labor. Wanton destruction of property just hits me that way because I work to buy most everything I own. It hit me on a second level because she is using the perceived beauty and good will associated with both the flower and a young woman as a means of covering her ills. She uses her appearance of whimsy in order to create chaos for others. What a prick!

The Guitar Drag piece hit me simply on a sonic level. As a musician, I find intrigue in strange sounds and the creation thereof. The motion of the dragging and the organic sound created were entrancing. The echoes and progressive creation of the sound really caught my ear and kept it for a while. Additionally, the shape of this aluminum sculpture added intrigue as to  the inner workings and the possibility of random creation of sound through slight rotations of the shape or the degradation of the material which would create new nuances in the sounds.

Ever is Over All by Pipilotti Rist
Ever is Overall by Pipilotti Rist depicts the feminism evolution of women breaking the glass ceiling overtime. The glass ceiling is a term used to define the social, political and economical limitation of women. The social aspects of the video are people passing the women observing her beauty. The economical aspect is the female police officer that passes and acknowledges the women in the blue dress. The role of a police officer is to protect others and be strong. Women are usually viewed as weak dedicates, beautiful things like tropical flowers. The flower in Rist’s video is made out of brass, yet it is still beautiful. With a whistle, the flower, shatters the glass window of unsuspending cars. At the sound of the rubble of glass hitting the ground, the women joy is turned into bliss. The brass flower represents women as an object of affection and the car window represents the glass ceiling. By the women shattering the windows she destroying the glass ceiling. She is filled with joy because breaking the glass represents her getting strength and power. The camera is observing the women from the perspective of objects in her environment like the car windows and people. The camera observes this woman from the side prior to the climax because cars and the women are both objects. But as the climax is approaching Rist changes perspective to the front, symbolizing the women separation from being an objectify. The artist use of the camera perspective and the object in the environment help to paint the bliss that women experience when they break the glass ceiling.
