Artist Statement for “A Penny’s Tragedy”

Pennies.  At present, pennies are the bulkiest and most expensive denomination of American currency.  People generally show disgust, hesitation and annoyance whenever dealing with such a useless coin.  Almost as if this poor cast of metal is a leper.  Aptly titled, “A Penny’s Tragedy,” this video aims to evoke the ‘victimized’ feelings of an unappreciated and cast away piece of daily life.  Through constant bombardment by animate/inanimate objects we see how mutually shunned these coins are.  Illusions of grandeur play the ever important role of false hope and belief in a happy ending.  Sadly, this video is a portrayal of the real world; where forlorn endings are the norm.
