I started this project simply as an assignment without passion but with the intention to put in as much effort as I could to create a solid piece. I took the technical approach of using all of the tools at my disposal to make something cool looking out of a rubber band ball.
Something about this rubber band ball called to me from the instant that I began contemplating a subject for portraiture. As I worked on composing this piece I grew to understand it. I saw much of myself within this sequence of woven rubber. It is wound tight, hewn from years of experience, led to its destiny without a clear destination, complex, yet simple. So many details are revealed through new lenses and angles. It moves where it should go, but slightly veers off of each path. It is hidden and found in light and darkness alike. It has a definite form but can be built or destroyed in an instant. It displays itself proudly, unable to be any more or less of itself but secure in its current form. It is me.
As a piece, I found the most profound reflection of myself in isolation. Most of the video is shot against a plain background. I intentionally plugged in an external mic and left it off in order to eliminate sound as a component. Most of my art is created in solitude, hiding the process behind mechanisms and ideas. On the white background, you can often see shadows of the object but they remain isolated by the light, on their own island of existence, left to find purpose in solitude.
