Rist Response

I really enjoyed Rist’s works. Her use of collage and capturing of movement were especially captivating and enjoyable to watch. Her exploration of natural life and technology pairs the two different forms in a seamless and beautiful way. The movement of water and the environmental interaction with the person on the 5th floor were mesmerizing to watch. (I probably hogged my couch for too long.) The fluidity of the video and its transitions also worked very well with the ceiling it was screened on. The movement of the video fit well into the organically shaped white blobs on the ceiling.

I really loved how she was able to use different mediums and techniques to capture attention and make watching her work an experience. From lying on beds and beanbags, to wading through light, and looking around an underwear chandelier- each piece was very unique. Every piece was especially well thought out and intricate as well. The were many layers to the works. The video was all beautifully composed and edited, and the means of showing them also added extra depth. Though it was simple, I loved the video on the 3rd floor that was projected onto a wall at an angle, creating a warped version of the film. The prism that resulted was sharp and helped to make the piece dynamic. The forms of projecting the work, having work projected in the corner of a room for example, was a really dynamic way to present the piece. The physical depth added a really great layer to the piece. Being able to walk on and interact with the pieces projected on the floor and on screens was very cool. The use of different mediums in video was very cool. I like the added meaning of projection video on a wall of white plastic tools and objects.

Overall the collection of work was great to watch and experience. It was even better to be able to see such a wide collection of work back to back. The “interactive” aspect of the show kept me engaged in the work.
