Pixel Forest

For this trip I started on the fifth floor and made my way down. I saw My Barbarian the Audience is Always Right first and I was really confused by what the message was. On one side there were two videos playing, one where people are on a boat chanting “suspension of beliefs” with the video switching to several individuals wearing Egyptian masks, and the other one where people are doing some kind of ritual or dance. I also saw a video of a play of a group of people (which I assumed were barbarians or native americans) and how they burned a large representation of a man in a suit through tribal music and ritual. I believe the message they were trying to portray was that the sense of community is often diminished today because of how busy or independent we are of each other. The video also has audience participation where the people cheered while the huge suit burns and there was also this huge mascot of a man made out of fabric where the actors were in the front to form the head and the hands while the audience was allowed to walk towards the rear or the body of the man. In doing this, I think they are showing that multiple members or people are necessary to form this sense of community and that they need to walk or work in unison to accomplish a single goal.

As I moved downstairs the 3 floors are exhibiting the Pixel Forest. The 4th floor has two huge cutouts in the ceiling and below it are several beds where the audience can lay down and immerse themselves to the video that was playing. This exhibit was really comforting in a sense that often times we lay down and watch something while at home or somewhere we can just relax. This is bringing that feeling of warmth among strangers where one can just lay down and experience this video of underwater textures and lullaby music. On the 3rd floor, the exhibit has this silicon ornaments that are hanging from the ceiling and has LED lights that are changing colors inside. I really liked this floor and I thought of being in an enchanted forest while I was there because of the lights and how big and many the ornaments are. I also thought of christmas lights and lanterns while I was there which brings this sense of the holiday spirit especially since christmas is fast approaching. They also had this chandelier of underwear which reflects different colors which I thought was weird and funny. The last floor has several white fabrics hanging that reflects several videos from projectors while a haunting song plays. This exhibit made me think of dreams because of the flock of sheep. I thought of how some people say if you can’t sleep, you should count sheeps jumping a fence in your head until you doze off. It was interesting how layers of fabric can either make the picture whole or distort it like a dream where things can make sense and not at the same time. I really enjoyed these exhibits because it really immerse you to this pixel world of textures, colors and sound that is communicating this surreal yet comforting feeling.
