Bloody Ballerina / A Project 4 Vision Statement

My vision for the final project, at this point in time, is to explore tragedy while retaining my signature surreal, perhaps humorous, whimsy. I am currently interested in doing a piece based on the real-life murder of a ballerina named Anna Gardie, who died in 1798 New York City at the hands of her husband Louie. Through video collage, I’ll look to blend fantasy and horror genres as well as explore the hyper femininity of ballet and the oppression women experience from the male sex (i.e. director, controlling husband). The hope is to venture into a new kind of ghost story while implementing more dance within my work for this class. Through the pairing of classic dance forms (ballet) with barbaric expressivity (murder), I create a new performance structure residing at the intersection of highbrow (fine art) and lowbrow (horror movie) sensibilities. This alliance between the ethereal realm of dance and tangible, everyday experience conjures an accessible forum for integration, not only for the dance community but for the public at large.
