This piece is centered around the poem “My Chinese” by Athena Chu. In it, she talks about her experience as a Chinese-American and how often the two parts of her identity are at odds. I identified with this poem as it reflects a lot of my own experience and internal conflict. In creating a visual representation of this poem, I wanted to capture the identity of Chinatown and its many layers. This reflects my own identity in many ways as there isn’t just one set approach to culture and experiences. The collage effects of the video editing shows the cut and pasted cultural experiences for a lot of Asian-Americans and even for first generation people of any ethnicity.
