Immigrant New York Rally: December 18

On Sunday, December 18th, International Migrants Day, the New York Immigration Coalition will bring together its members and partners to rally and send a clear message from New Yorkers to President-Elect Trump and his administration: immigrant communities are here to stay and we will fight back against hate and anti-immigrant policies!

Our Call to Action:

  • Defend the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which provides 50,000 New Yorkers work permits and other essential resources
  • Protect immigrant communities from deportation
  • Prevent the creation of a Muslim registry
  • Support refugee resettlement

More immigration is available from the New York Immigration Coalition.

Open Mic on Dec. 16

Students in Professor Jennifer Hayashida’s Hunter College class, “Nation, Self & Asian Identity,” have organized an open mic to be held at the Asian American Writers’ Workshop on Friday, December 16, from 7-9pm.

The emphasis will be on the voices of Asian American/Pacific Islander students and other students of color – to respond to the election and also tell their stories of migration, racialization, displacement, discovering their voices, and finding community. But this is not limited to Hunter students; all students who wish to come together to learn from and be inspired by each other, and together imagine and work towards better political futures, are invited. There will be a Facebook page for the event quite soon.

Dreamers/DACA: Be in the US by Inauguration Day

Some immigration experts, including staff at City College, have advised Dreamers and immigrants with DACA status to make sure they return to the United States from any travels abroad by Inauguration Day (January 20, 2017) in case the president-elect immediately rescinds protections that President Obama extended during his administration. For more details, see this news story from Talking Points Memo.
