“Winning seems to absolve many things. So does money. When the soccer club Juventus responded to the news that superstar Cristiano Ronaldo had settled with a woman in a sexual assault allegation years earlier, it tweeted that Ronaldo had shown “great professionalism and dedication” and was a “great champion,” before showing a clip of him scoring a goal and celebrating.”
This quote stood out to me since I find it fascinating how so many men/women are able to get away with rape and sexual assault allegations because of money fame or wins. Celebrities like Cristiano Ronaldo should not be forgiven and their cases should not be forgotten easier than that of the average person. Using his win to cover up his previous allegations seems morally wrong, especially towards the victim.
Often, from a fan or general public’s point of view, a sinful act is forgivable as long as the defendant provides enough explanation and reason for the wrongdoing and apologize for his or her mistakes. However, from the victim’s perspective, the harm that may have been done can never be erased, and the defendant can never be forgiven.
I completely agree with you. There shouldn’t be any reason why we should treat him differently than any other person. If we heard someone else committed sexual assault the case would be treated differently or even get the person cancelled, but Ronaldo continues to be looked as a soccer icon.
Whether rich or poor, it is unfair for anyone to escape their crimes. I think we agree on most of the topic, but one place we disagree is that you state that it is “morally wrong for the victim”. The quote stated that “Cristiano Ronaldo had settled with a woman in a sexual assault allegation years earlier”. Evidently, if the woman and Ronaldo settled that means they came to an agreement where the woman was satisfactory with the circumstances because if she was not then she would have continued the court proceedings and been more vocal in the media about her circumstances. Thus, if the woman was unhappy with the media exposure she had the opportunity to make other choices to create an outcome where there would be increased exposure which may be at the expense of other resources. Therefore, it would not be fair to say if that the situation is morally wrong if the accuser accepted the circumstances if they had other options to change the circumstances.
