English 2100 x 90: Fall 2020

Module 12

The theme is in the meme, lots of complex feelings happening right now. Let’s find new ways to honor and encourage complexity.

This week you should be feeling ready to transition from “research question” stage to the “thesis” stage of writing your paper.

Here’s what you need to do this week:

    1. Read this “Incorporating Your Sources” tip sheet, and peruse the linked resources.
    2. Finish “The Case for Reparations.” When you’re done reading, watch this video of Ta-Nehisi Coates speaking to the House in response to Republican Senator and House Majority Leader Mitch Mcconell’s statement “America should not be held liable for something that happened 150 years ago, since none of us currently alive are responsible.” Do you think Coates adequately “makes his case?” Write a blog post in which you offer some musings on the philosophical question, “can something be not your fault, but still your responsibility?” Try to answer it in the context of Coates’ piece, quoting if you need to. You are encouraged to be open and creative with this response, and to offer your genuine thoughts and reactions to reading this complex piece of journalism. Post your blog by Wednesday at noon, and write comments on 2 peer posts by Thursday at 5PM.
    3. Post your Annotated Bibliography to Blackboard by Wednesday 11/11 at 11:59PM.
    4. Review my slides from today, and work on developing a thesis this week. Also re-read Michael Austin’s thesis handout, and check this resource from the Baruch College Writing Center for help.
    5. By Sunday, 11/15 at 11:59PM, write out the answers to this outline worksheet and upload it to your working group folder. You have two choices here: you may upload the worksheet and its answers, or you may use the worksheet to create a fleshed-out outline of your own. Either way you should be uploading something of substance to the group folder so that we can look at your work in depth next week.

Need to talk your research process through? Come to my office hour on Wednesday at 10:30, or message me on Slack.

Till next time ~*
