American girl

I think the theme of this profile is getting readers to identify with Michelle Obama and understanding of how to see the world through black and white. The overarching narrative is how relatable she is. Some of her actions seem unexpected, but her upbringing shapes a lot the decisions she makes today. At Nehisi-Coates was surpluses to hear Michelle recounting her life. He had never heard a black public figure recall such an idyllic youth.

Black and white

History repeats itself. The apartment complex was built by MetLife after World War II for war vets, keeping rents low. Now it is there to continue serving the middle-class. The recent coverage talks about preserving it and selling it so that I will remain affordable for its residents. It also relates, in 2006 when MetLife sold the property, rents were raised and tenants where evicted. In Amy fox’ story, there was a time where people where being evicted and it was the tenants versus the landlord.

Conflict story pitch ( St. Francis College Mens basketball)

I decided to focus on St, Francis College in downtown Brooklyn. My brother just recently graduated and was part of the men’s basketball team. While on the team there was a scandal that took place that did not receive a lot of media coverage. A few basketball players were accused of inappropriate actions with a female student on campus. I would like to focus how it affected the program in terms of active players and their mind-state as well as prospective student athletes looking at the school.

Like a nomad moving about seasonally to find necessities to live, Staten Island arts constantly changed homes for many years. In 2010, they were renting basements to settle into and promote their art. Continue reading

Where I came from

I agree it is like a love letter. Leibling expresses how he feels about New York. He compares it to places his friends travels and feels like no other places has the same quality. It’s just not New York. He talks about the people, saying New York women are the most beautiful in the world. As a reporter the technique he used was chronological. He told us the history of him living there, of his dad living there as well. The business his father owned and of the origin of the dialect locals spoke.

Small business story proposal

The business I would like to focus on is The Staten Island Culture Lounge. I walk past this place everyday but have never stepped foot inside. I’ve always wondered what occupied this space but most times I’m passing by is in a rush to get on the ferry. The culture lounge is the Country’s only artist space inside a commuter area, as it is located in the St. George Ferry terminal in New Brighton. After doing some reading about the business, it seems like an interesting and positive place. The culture lounge features exhibits from visual artists, poets, musicians, writers and performers.  Not only does it provide a platform for local artist to showcase their talents, it allows them to sell their original work and make a profit. I think it will be interesting to do a story on what the inspiration was for starting this business. Also what the atmosphere is like working there.
