Description: This is a planning sheet for students to use in-class to guide them from their research-based project to a multimodal work. The theme of the course is Silence: Uses and Abuses. Students wrote papers on the topic of silence, then they listened to podcasts and explored comparable websites and videos.
Silence/Digital Project Steps for 1st Draft
Planning
1) Tell the group about your Essay 2 paper’s a) topic and b) argument and c) evidence. Choose someone to take notes on each member’s essay 2 and to document all other steps of the process.
2) Find common ground on how you can make an argument and, to a degree, make it feel somewhat like a story, i.e., a narrative that comes together with a point you are making. Determine that argument and story.
3) Discuss how to integrate your Essay 2 paper into the digital project: where, what section, etc.
4) Determine how to integrate the other sources into the digital project, i.e., “Civil Disobedience,” Letter from Birmingham Jail or Erin Brokovich.
5) Roles: Volunteer for as much as you can and decide who will do what, including who will find a good video online on how to create a video, an iMovie, or a podcast.
6) Watch one of the videos in #5 together. Brainstorm while someone takes notes on how to present the project: What will be the components and the narrative arc or argument? How will you incorporate parts of your Essay 2? Which of these sources will you use (“CD,” Letter or Erin), and how will you incorporate parts? Which parts? Do you need to conduct interviews, esp for the podcast project? Who are those people and who will contact them for interviews, or will it be “man on the street,” perhaps at Baruch? Who will find which images online to use in the website or video?

Goals for Tuesday and Thursday, April 17 and April 19
Tuesday: If needed, do any of the above, including watching the video in #5 together. If you need to go outside the room to conduct interviews, let the instructor know. By class end, all 3 groups will present their notes, including stating who is doing what role/s and what the argument/focus/story of the project will be.
Thursday: All projects will make it clear how Essay 2 sections will be incorporated and how one of the other 3 sources will be included.
For Website: A layout that at least shows the plan on each of the 4 pages, including whose paper will be used where and where the other sources will fit in.
For Video: A layout of how each of the seconds of the 3 minutes will be used.
For Podcast: A written plan on how the seconds of the 3 minutes will be used, with a sample 30 second audio.
