That scene right there is the reason why while growing up, Steve Rogers AKA Captain America was my favorite superhero.
For those of you who weren’t into heros growing up, the guy in the army uniform who beat up the bully and saved the nerd wasn’t Captain America. It was the skinny small kid.
I didn’t love the character because of a scene after he got muscled up where he was kicking butt or throwing his mighty shield. It was the scene where the short and skinny kid was getting pulverized that made me love him. Why? Because he stood up for what he believed in despite clearly being outmatched.
He believed that what the bully was doing was wrong and that he needed to do something. Not only that, but when it came down to the fight and he was on the floor clearly beaten he got back and kept going. He got knocked down again, but it didn’t matter. He was going to stick up for what he believed was right no matter what.
“I could do this all day” he said. It didn’t matter that he was getting beat up. He was doing the right thing and he knew it so the beating was worth the vindication he received in return
That’s why people like me love superheros like Captain America. More times than not, these hero are put against incredible odds and despite being outmatched they still fight for what they believe.
We could all learn from this. If you believe in something or are passionate about it the it doesn’t matter if the odds are stacked against you, you have to go for it and follow your dreams. If you fail you fail but at least you could say you tried and gave it your all, and at the end of the day that’s the most we could do.
