For those of you who didn’t grow up in the 2000’s, Sum 41 was a Punk Rock band who specialized in teenage angst and this is one of their hit songs “Heart attack”. Their music resonated with many young people such as myself until today. Why? Because the band spoke about problems that teens could relate to.
Of course in hindsight, many of the “problems” that we had as teenagers now seem to be silly but one problem that has stuck with us since our teen years was a pretty simple one; getting out of bed. I always found that getting out of bed was a weird issue that a lot of people shared and it always confused me. There’s a line in this song that pops into my head whenever I’m mulling over this issue.
“What’s the point of the alarm that I’m ignoring?
It’s even raining,
I’m not complaining,
But waking up is hard to do.”
When you wake up to the sound of your alarm early in the morning, getting out of bed could feel like fighting through the gates of hell. All you want is to stay in bed and go back to sleep. After you finally muster up the willpower to get your lazy butt out of bed and get yourself on your way to work or school you start to rush and curse yourself for staying in bed so long. It doesn’t make sense. I’m already awake and I know I’m not going to get any more rest by lying around awake in bed, so what am I doing.?
The truth is we stay in bed because we’re scared. We’re scared of the challenges that the coming day bring and all the responsibility that it comes with. We want to stay in bed forever where it’s comfy and safe but of course that’s ridiculous. Our problems and challenges will exist no matter where we are.
Just like our teenage problems that seemed so overwhelming at the time (that’s right full circle), our fear of leaving bed is silly in hindsight.
The best way to face these problems is to face them head on because all of these challenges you’re scared of won’t go away until you do something about it.
Next time you wake up, rather than wasting time in bed, get up and ready for the day. Don’t let fear keep you down.
