I Hate Superman

As I’ve said in the past I’m a big superhero fan, which is why it might be surprising to know that I hate Superman. I do however love Batman, which is why I loved watching Batman take down Superman in Batman V. Superman.

Now many have asked me “Why do you hate Superman so much? He stands for hope truth justice and the American way!” and to me that’s all B.S.

Superheros are people that earned some great power who put others before themselves. The whole appeal of superheroes is the fact that despite all their strength and power they are vulnerable in a way. They have flaws and faults but despite all of that they persevere. They put the safety of others before all else and will often risk their lives to save others. Superman does not meet that standard.

Superman is some alien who just naturally has powers and suffered no real tragedy. He is never risking his own life to save others because he is invincible. There is never an instance where there is an actual threat to Superman’s life. As Batman says in the video above “You’re not brave, men are brave” to Superman.

In my opinion, the quote means that men are brave because despite being vulnerable and afraid they persevere. That brave men know that there’s a risk of failure but they fight that fear and take the leap of faith. Superman is usually never in a situation where he’s risking death or failure because the guy is invincible, super fast, super strong, and has some bonus plot armor when necessary. He’s not brave because there are no stakes.

The lesson here: Bravery is the key to taking the leap of faith to accomplish your dreams but what is bravery. It is doing what needs to be done no matter the stakes are. Bravery is doing something despite being scared and despite the fear of failure.

If you want to accomplish your dreams you have to take these leaps of faith and to do that you need to be brave. It’s okay to be scared as long as you persevere. Being brave means pushing through your fears and taking risks!
