Jewish people that lived in that time were in dark and worry everyday. After witnessing their friend Cohn and his son were hung by the Germans, Vladek was so scared that he stayed at home for a few days. They also became serious about dealing goods without a coupon. When the Jewish people were demanded to go to the stadium, everyone was struggled about whether they should go or not for uncertain results that would happen. Vladek’s father also came by for advice of if going to the stadium since he did not have a job, which might lead to something bad. The family all feared of going to the stadium for everything unknown. When they were ranked on the left or right line, the people in left line were all worried deadly for most of them were out of employment.
ENG2100—Maus
The most apparently change happened to Artie’s father, Vladek was physically. As he mentioned that his hands were delicate, but during the war, when he had to do some heavy work, he became much stronger and tougher. Other than that, he was kind of casual before the war; after having been through all the hard time during the war, he became more serious and surefooted, as he criticizing his son of dropping cigarette ashes on the carpet and throwing his coat away. This novel is interesting for me to read because of its unusual way of organizing the whole story, firstly of course, it was graphic, just like a comic book; and it also has a nice structure, and the story is really attractive for the descriptive details and plots with a quirky twist.
ENG2100—-Woolf
In this chapter, Woolf got to the” war “concept by describing a luncheon in some parts. This luncheon was kind of like the routine in the university. She did wonder and enjoy the autumn views in the campus as usual. But then she came to the doubt that things had become a little bit different from what they were before the war. It turned out to be the humming noise accompanied by when people talked. Then she considered about her past attitude to the fact, the tailless Manx cat. Before the war, she might bursted into laughter if someone talked about the cat without a tail. But at that point, she started to think about why the cat lost its tail, “Was he really born so, or had he lost his tail in an accident” as the said in the passage. It was strange of a cat without a tail, not to mention a world just experienced a war.
ENG2100—-THE WAR
Q: How does the theme of home resonate throughout the excerpt?
Home sometimes has the meaning of refuge. In the passage, Stein stayed at a lot of different “homes” during the time. People from those “homes” were really kind and thoughtful, such as the Whiteheads. They offered room and board; they communicated with each other; they shared not only happiness, but also worries; so of course they had a great time being together as well as went through tough situations together. This seemed to be one of the important meanings of home to me that they were like families. What’s more, for people who once experienced the war, they would have the home definition from another different angle–their country. Country is the kind of “home” that one would sacrifice everything to defend. As mentioned in the excerpt, the refugee Abel said solemnly after his first day in Paris, ” I think all that was worth fighting for”. As far as i am concerned, not only Abel, but also all the soldiers, medical workers and all the people in the front would feel the same way that their “home”, their country was definitely worth their fighting.
