ENG2100—-THE WAR

Q: How does the theme of home resonate throughout the excerpt?

Home sometimes has the meaning of refuge. In the passage, Stein stayed at a lot of different “homes” during the time. People from those “homes” were really kind and thoughtful, such as the Whiteheads. They offered room and board; they communicated with each other; they shared not only happiness, but also worries; so of course they had a great time being together as well as went through tough situations together. This seemed to be one of the important meanings of home to me that they were like families. What’s more, for people who once experienced  the war, they would have the home definition from another different angle–their country. Country is the kind of “home” that one would sacrifice everything to defend. As mentioned in the excerpt, the refugee Abel said solemnly after his first day in Paris, ” I think all that was worth fighting for”.  As far as i am concerned, not only Abel, but also all the soldiers, medical workers and all the people in the front would feel the same way that their “home”, their country  was definitely worth their fighting.
