Day One – 9/11/23: I Did not expect to realize I was code-switching on the first day but it was when I was on the phone with one of my friends, that my aunt called me to help her find her phone when I realized the tone of my voice was much calmer and more responsive compared to me jokingly yelling at my friend for stepping on my shoe earlier in the day.
Day Two – 9/12/23: I was talking to one of the financial aid advisors today, and I responding to their question in a serious yet respectful manner. This compared to me leaving and going to the club areas where I met up with some friends and had a more relaxed speaking tone with them.
Day three – 9/13/23: I was on the phone with my dad when he asked me how I was doing and I responded to him in Yoruba then continued talking in English.
Day Four – 9/14/23: I was invited to my mom’s friend’s birthday party so I had to wear a suit and some church shoes which I wouldn’t normally wear but had to due to the occasion.
Day Five – 9/15/23: Today I woke up and went to my local deli and ordered a breakfast sandwich then after walking out I passed by an old married couple speaking in Yoruba with which I said to them God morning in Yoruba then continued walking home.
Day six – 9/16/23: Today I went bike riding with some friends, we chose to stop by a local deli since we were all thirsty. Before we left the store some shady person walked in and started questioning me about money so I decided to pretend as If I was deaf and the person responded with “Never mind” and walked away.
Day 7 – 9/18/23: Today I had a job interview after school so instead of heading over to the job interview in my shorts and a shirt and decided to put on some Jeans and a polo shirt to seem more presentable.
I can relate to speaking another language to greet another person that I do not know which shows that you’re being considerate of others around you.
