Analyzing “When I Was Your Man”- by Bruno Mars

“When I Was Your Man” is a song made by Bruno Mars, and it was released in 2012. Bruno Mars is a popular name among the genre of pop and he did not disappoint with this track. The song portrays feelings of regret and sadness towards a person that you previously loved. Bruno Mars is playing the piano and the piano is supposed to represent a sad/melancholic vibe. The piano serves to perform the song’s basic yet powerful melody, creating an intimate and emotional mood. Bruno Mars’ soulful vocals take center stage because of the simple arrangement. Bruno Mars uses his lyrics to show his feelings of regret. He explains all of the things that he could’ve done with his ex-partner to keep the relationship alive. He admits that he could have been a better boyfriend and he hates himself for not displaying his love with actions. Bruno Mars expresses a feeling of loneliness and solitude because he is not with his partner anymore. You could feel the pain in his voice and the sadness that had overtaken his mind. Some of the lyrics that stand out to me are “My heart breaks a little when I hear your name” and ” I should’ve bought you flowers and held your hand”. Bruno really left his partner and just hearing her name makes him sad because he feels that he was a lost piece of himself when the relationship ended. There is some progression that is seen from Bruno Mars towards the end of the song. He acknowledges that his ex-partner has moved on and he wishes the best for her. He states, ” I hope he buys you flowers. I hope he holds your hand, gives you all his hours when he has the chance”. Bruno accepts that he cannot keep a relationship with the person that he loves but, he wishes the best for her in a future relationship and he hopes that her new boyfriend treats her the way she deserves to be treated. This song is very popular and appealing to people who went through a similar situation as Bruno. People can relate to the feeling of heartbreak and regret present in Bruno’s voice and his lyrics.
