Thank You and Shared Google Folder

Hi Everyone,

Thanks to all of you for a great semester. I learned a lot from all of you! Make sure to stay in touch with me.

And thanks also for a series of great presentations. To follow up on our discussion yesterday, I’ve created a shared folder here for those of you who would like to share your essays with each other. Feel free to get in touch with each other to discuss your essays as well. But of course, remember the principal rule of giving feedback to a writer: always start with positive commentary before discussing challenges/questions/issues.

I’ll be sending you graded essays out in a few minutes. And I should have your grades posted to CUNY First by tomorrow. If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to write me.

Presentations Next Week

Hi Everyone,

Just a reminder that we’ll be doing presentations on Monday 5/13 and Wednesday 5/15 next week. About half of you have signed up using the google signup sheet. Please make sure to put your name on the sheet as soon as possible. It is available here. See you then!

Presentation Signup Sheet and Reminder for Wednesday

Hi Everyone,

I’m looking forward to reading all your essays in the next week or so. Click here for the signup sheet for your presentations. Remember, you can be as creative as you want in your presentation as long as it is no more than 5 minutes.

Speaking of 5 minute presentations, for our next meeting please be prepared to share your favorite short video/short film/short political presentation/short music video/short animation/short poem/short song/and etc. I want to see and hear from you about short presentations that you really like. Looking and listening to these will hopefully inspire everyone as they work on their presentations for next week.

See you on Wednesday!

For Wednesday

Hi Everyone,

It was good to see everyone again today (though I wish I would have seen everyone today). I think we had a productive peer review session. Here are some important announcements:

  • For Wednesday, please download and read this excerpt from the Hidden Life of Trees. Write down a some notes about sections that interested you. We’ll talk about the reading for a few minutes at the beginning of class and then we’ll make our way to Madison Square Park to spend some time paying attention to the world outside our heads. I’ll give you a hard copy of the brief assignment connected to our park trip before we go outside but you can click here to see it too. Make sure to bring a pad of paper and a pen/pencil.
  • I’ll publish a separate blog post (right after this one) with a link to the Dropbox folder for turning in your research essay.
  • As we discussed in class today, we’ll end this semester with two class meetings devoted to your research presentations. Click here to see the assignment, which reflects exactly what I described in class today. Please also note that the two presentation days will be May 13th and May 15th (not May 15th and 20th as originally posted on the syllabus).

That’s everything. See you on Wednesday!

Over Break

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for a good discussion about style today. I’ll send another message near the end of spring break to remind you, but I just want to reiterate now that you need to bring in a printed draft of your final essay on Monday, April 29th.

Make sure to dedicate some time to working on this draft over break. But also make sure to take some time to relax if you can! Have a great break and see you on the 29th.

For Wednesday

Hi Everyone,

On Wednesday, we’ll talk and think about writing style. In preparation, I’d like you to look over your previous essays for this class (and perhaps for 2100 too) and then write a response to this question (and bring it to class): how would you describe your style as a writer?

The best way to answer this question is to think about some of these related questions:
-Do you tend to write long sentences or short sentences?
-Do you tend to write long paragraphs or short paragraphs?
-Do you like to state  your main argument in the first paragraph? Or do you wait until later in this essay?
-Do you prefer writing in a formal or informal style?
-Do you like to experiment and do something different in each essay? Or do you tend to pick similar topics?
-Do you enjoy using first-person or do you prefer third-person?

On Wednesday, we’ll talk about how style is foremost an expression of self. Just like your style of clothing, your style of writing reflects who you are and who you want to be. Write your response to the prompt with this idea in mind.

In addition, download this famous guide to style written by William Strunk and E.B. White. Read it and bring it to class (either printed or downloaded onto a device). As you read, I want you to:

-Find one rule that you particularly like and briefly describe why.
-Find one rule that you don’t agree with or are confused by and describe why.

Notice that this reading is called “an approach to style.” Though the authors provide rules in this chapter, their rules are actually just a series of suggestions. I like many of their suggestions but I also don’t like rules #1, #15, #17, #20, and (partly)#21. We’ll discuss your responses in class. See you then!

Précis Assignment for Next Meeting

Hi Everyone,

For our next meeting, be sure to complete the précis assignment that I handed out to you in our individual conferences (available here too). This assignment will not be graded but it is required. If you don’t bring it to class on Monday, you’ll be marked absent. So be sure to do it. You can handwrite or print it.

As I mentioned, you don’t have to find a new source to complete this assignment. Often times we skim over our sources and miss important details. You can use this assignment as an opportunity to dig deeper into a source you’ve already used. Or, you can find a new source instead. Remember that you can use the library’s “ask a librarian” function (lower left-hand side) for help if you’re stuck. And always feel free to ask me questions if you have them.

See you on Monday.

Revising Attittudes

Hello Everyone,

In preparation for our class meeting this Wednesday, please print/download, annotate, and bring to class on Wednesday April 10th this important essay about the revision process, entitled “Revising Attitudes.”

After reading it, please write responses to these prompts and bring them to class:

  • Identify one of the ten “resistance(s) to revision” that you think you have and describe why. For example, I used to believe firmly in reason #3 (revision makes things worse). I thought my first ideas were best ideas. Pick one of these and write a reflection on it.
  • Identify one positive revision experience you’ve had in the past. Did you re-write your college entrance essay fifteen times? Do you think it got better? How? Did you ever write an email, save it, revise it, save it, revise it, and then send it? Why? What did you do? Have you ever edited a short video clip? What did you leave out? Why?

Be prepared to talk about revision as a form of composition on Wednesday.

In addition, please bring the hard copies of the research essay assignment and the precis assignment that I handed out in our conferences.

Conferences

Hi Everyone,

Remember that we’ll be having individual conferences this Wednesday (April 3rd) and next Monday (April 8th). There’s still four open slots for the Monday April 8th day. For those who haven’t signed up please make sure to do so. In your conferences, be prepared to talk to me about your second essay and about our plans for your third essay. I’ll handout the third essay assignment to the Wednesday group and I’ll post it for everyone on Wednesday as well.

Wednesday group, I’ll have your graded essays back to you later tonight or tomorrow morning.

Monday group, I’ll get your graded essays to you no later than this Friday afternoon.

For those of you who wanted to continue listen to the interview with Daniel Kahneman, you can do so here.

Looking forward to meeting with each of you in-person!
