Ten Lessons, Ten Quotes
Lesson1: 3d printing technology can revolutionize the world and completely change how people live their daily lives. The possibilities are limitless as 3d printing puts the power of manufacturing at the hands of users.
Quote: This new technology would replace almost everything that we need and we can be our own demand and supply.

Lesson 2: There are pros and cons to switching from traditional manufacturing methods to 3d printing.
Quote: The benefits of shifting towards 3D printing is that there is less pollution generated. Mass production often requires a long assembly line of machines that demand a lot of energy input. If mass-production was led by a few 3D printers, energy usage would reduce dramatically. 3D printing also allows mass products to be customizable, which is a risk when traditionally manufactured. The problem with 3D printing in mass-production is manufacturers would have no economies of scale, which is a foundation to supporting our economy.

Lesson 3: 3d printing offers innovative entrepreneurs an opportunity to begin businesses they otherwise would not have been able to open.
Quote: Prior to 3D printing, creating and launching a new device requires so much attention that it is difficult to maintain a day job. For example, to even gain funds for a prototype, an entrepreneur will have to meet with investors – it is overall a very time consuming process. However, with 3D printing, it is much easier to design, create, produce prototypes, fix designs, and so on and so forth.

Lesson 4: 3d printing products is not an easy process and there is a lot of room for improvement.
Quote: 3D printing is not magic—it, like most things in the world, is a process that can require a lot of time and effort. And, like most processes, there are difficulties. For example, we are not able to scan what lies beneath the surface of an object, and we cannot use any raw material we desire to 3D print.

Lesson 5: Design software is the first step to 3d printing, but current software limits the creativity of
Quote: In today’s age there are limits to creativity by some design softwares, and the author believes that in the future this will no longer be an issue. Future 3D printing gives our imagination room to play and the design process will no longer be stifled by the ‘Earl Grey Syndrome’: the ability to only create what the machine tells you, you can create.

Lesson 6: Biological hurdles complicate applying 3d printing technology to the medical field.
Quote: “…cells have to be printed in the right place for it to be able to function. Additionally, these cells have to be “activated.” … Over several decades of research, scientists still have not found a way to print out a functioning organ due to these criteria that only nature can inexplicably fulfill.

Lesson 7: 3d printing is a field of multiple disciplines wherein theories and advancements from different disciplines can be applied to print increasingly complicated objects.
Quote: Researchers are finding that one of the most effective ways to mimic nature’s design intelligence is to apply mathematical rules, or algorithms, to generate shape, such as the Fibonacci series.

Lesson 8: 3d printing is the environmentally friendly technology of the future.
Quote: Whereas certain materials, when in use, can cause severe harm to our environment. 3D printing would solve or at least alleviate that problem, it does not require a large amount of supply and energy but the overall output would be lower than traditional methods.

Lesson 9: The future of 3d printing is not without controversy as the technology will likely create new opportunities for crime.
Quote: However, unfortunately, we might make drugs with using the 3D printer. These drugs must be much cheaper than drugs that you buy from a drug dealer.

Lesson 10: The ability to print multiple materials in one product will lead to the ability to print active systems.
Quote: If it were possible to print an entire working phone, then we wont even have to leave for the store or go through a cell phone company again! This level of 3-d printing will open up gigantic doors for what is possible in creating active and live systems from the go.
