Needs for Community in Baruch

***Campus resources for students

  • Entertainment for students
  • Food variety and choices
  • Maintain energy level for studying

Stakeholder Map List for the Need of “Campus resources for students”  (Xin)

Our challenge is to trace campus resources for students, because our members brought tons of thinks that students might want at the Baruch College campus. Most of the students might not be rich and they may come here to earn a college degree to look for a better job and a better life. So for examples, we thought that free notebooks, free Wi-Fi, free printing service could be very useful and important for students to support their students’ lives. Also, these things may encourage students to be good students. Faculties, facilities, Book store and even vending machines, these are all things that lead to different communities at Baruch. ( Pete)

The reason why we chose the resources of Baruch is because many students would encounter and deal with different communities of Baruch because of the resource in the college. When there are more resources in the campus, students are more likely to bond with one another and create groups that share common interests. In order for students to do work and have a good time in college campus, the resources creates opportunities.  (Jayden)

Another strong contended for a need/challenge for be food choices. There were a lot of clubs that carried food, because this topic could be very attractive for students to meet up and hang out together. Also it is easy to let students join as members. It would be quite easy to do food choices because many areas that circulate around food choices were discussed in class. It is clear to see that food has many areas that connect to a student’s daily life basis. Food choices can ultimately affect the physical aspect of the student. For student who are looking to stay fit, it is very important that they have options to keep their clean diet. A meal could potential be the energy source that keeps the person awake. (Xin)

Technology loan service (laptop computers, etc.) and Wi-Hi service

Stakeholders: Library

Business research; there is a gap between students’ convenience and library’s service offer.

Primary research

Students make a long line before 9:30am every day to borrow laptop computers. Some students complained that they cannot borrow them to use them at the class before 9:30am. Also, this service becomes short on the weekend. So students who has a full-time job and take classes on the weekend complained this service’s situation. Moreover, the library staff said that you cannot borrow laptops on a holiday, you cannot borrow iPad and MacBook for 3-day and Wi-Hi service is only at Baruch College. Additionally, iPad and MacBook are fewer than normal laptops.

Secondary research

There are three types of equipment at the Baruch College library that you can borrow, iPad, MacBook and the normal laptop. The types of the length that you can borrow is the 3-hour, the same-day and the 3-day. On the weekday this service is from 9:30am to 9:30pm except on Friday. On Friday its service ends at 4:30pm. Then on the weekend its service is from 10:30am to 4:30pm. Also, the library has 24 units of iPad for 3-hour, 8 units of iPad Mini for 3-hour, 50 units of MacBook Air for 3-hour, 30 units of MacBook Air for same-day, 43 units of Latitude 5420 Laptop for 3-hour, 123 units of Latitude 5420 Laptop for same-day, and 75 units of Latitude 5420 Laptop for 3-day.

Design research; the library should match students’ needs to improve the user-friendliness.

iPad and MacBook are more popular than normal laptops and handy. So it should increase the number of them.

The service for the weekend including Friday should make longer the same way as weekdays.

The service should be from 7am the same as the library hours with using kiosk.

The service should be until midnight the same as the library hours with using kiosk.

Students should borrow them and return them among CUNY like Citibike.

Students should borrow even iPad and MacBook for 3-day.

Students should use Wi-Hi service even at their homes with using a security code.

The library should enhance environment of kiosk to increase the convenience for students.

Even if it is on holidays, students should use kiosk like a bank’s ATM machine.

Stakeholder: School Cafeteria

Food variety, free coffee, easy check out, microwave and more space.

Business research: The space and food are very limited to students.

 Primary Research

Every Mon-Thu, students pack up the cafeteria and most of time, I can even find a seat. Student make a long line during lunch hours, a lot people in the line complain about no enough cashier and line.

Also, there are only few food selections. Food from the food court is a bit pricy.

Secondary Research

School has been getting new food options over the last two years.

Four lines are all opened during lunch hours.

More chairs have been added to the hallway that connected inner and outer cafeteria.

Self-serve Soda machine has been operated in this semester and receive positive feedback from students.

More sandwich and yogurt selection has been added to cold food section

Every Friday after 3pm, all food in café is in half price.

Design Research

School needs to put investment on advancing cooking equipment to reduce supply cost.

Redesign the cafeteria sitting area layout, especially those high tables and chairs in inner café.

Make more stuffs work during lunch hours, and less people in other time period.

Add more self-serve food courts to make more selection.

Add more microwaves, and sell one of the vending machine on the 1st floor

Work with local restaurants for delivering service.

Stakeholder : Game Room

More Game Variety, Drinks and Snacks provided, Friendly environment and bigger space.

Business Research : The environment and game variety is very limited to students

Primary Research :

Students are likely to go to the game room when they are looking forward to relax from classes and just meet friends at a very friendly and entertaining environment. However, not all the students feel comfortable to reach out and go inside the game room in order to meet new friends and just go out of their comfort zone to socialize with others. If there were faculty or members that would encourage the social interaction between students then it would provide better place for students to relax.

It is also very important for students to have more variety of games to play with because students might not want to be active to play ping pong, billiards, Foosball, they might be looking to play other games as well and even board games. It is important that the student life faculty look into that aspect and have options for students with different interests.

Secondary Research

  1. As a commuter school, most students leave campus after studying is over. A typical guy or girl is someone who’s quickly packing up after class, squeezing into a crowded elevator, and rushing to catch a train home or to a part-time job. Issue of students engagement or interactions.                                                                                                                                                    https://colleges.niche.com/cuny-baruch-college/guys–and–girls/

10 ideas

  1. 24/7 service – NY basically never sleeps. And Baruch has many students who are full-time or part-time workers. So Baruch would start on 24/7 service to match these kinds of students.
  2. Kiosk at an entrance floor – This would be very convenient for students and especially disabled students. Library should think about a student base.
  3. More iPad and MacBook – iPad and MacBook are popular and handy. Library should put them more. If Library leased many iPad and MacBook, these lease prices would go down. iPad and MacBook are fewer than PC now.
  4. Long-day service – 3-day service is longest among rental services now. This can be short for research projects and long essays. Library should start 1 week service. Also, this might be useful when students travel.
  5. Service among CUNY – Students could borrow and return iPad, MacBook and PC at any CUNY branches. If students lived far from Baruch, it would not be convenient and they might not return them. So this service would improve students’ lives.
  6. Security code – Students could use Wi-Fi at their homes. This service would be very useful. So I highly recommend it to Baruch.
  7. Service can borrow PC online – Students make a long line before 9:30am every day to borrow laptop computers. Library is get crowded and students are irritated. So online service would lighten this situation.
  8. Kiosk at Vertical Campus – This is very convenient to borrow PC before it begins classes. This service would increase the convenience.
  9. Service can download at PC – Mac at Baruch allows to download software, but PC does not. For example, students can download SketchUp on only Mac computers. This is very inconvenient. So this service would help PC users.
  10. Provide latest PC – PC is heavier than Mac. So Library should have ultrathin models. So this service would useful for especially women to carry it.
